Mr Justice Fancourt was called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn in 1987. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2003. In 2009 he became a Recorder (Crime).

He was appointed a Deputy High Court Judge in 2013 and as a High Court Judge assigned to the Chancery Division in 2017. He was President of the Lands Chamber of the Upper Tribunal from 2019 to 2022.

In 2021, he was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the County Palatine of Lancaster, and Supervising Judge in the North and North-East.

He also hears cases in the Patents Court.
